Building a new home will probably represent the largest financial investment you’ll ever make. So, when it comes to choosing a builder, it goes without saying that you can never have too much information.
With a production builder – a company that builds a number of homes in a development based on a limited set of floor plans – it will be easier to see and walk through sample homes. In fact, they will probably have a few model homes open every day.
With a custom home builder – a company that builds one-of-a-kind homes – you may not get the same walk through experience. All of their homes will be occupied. Perhaps they’ll offer photographs, 3D models or blueprints for you to look through.
In either case, be sure to consider your options carefully before choosing one to build your home.
Keep in mind you’ll be working with your builder for five to ten months, depending on the time of year and type of house you’re building. Plus, you may be calling on them for up to a year after construction is complete to resolve any issues with construction, systems or appliances. So be sure to pick someone you’ve researched thoroughly – someone you’re comfortable with and feel sure about.
